angels who go before us…

UBC TOTEM POLE 10

I visited one of my favourite places today–the UBC Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver, BC. It is an absolutely spectacular museum full of First Nations treasures that tell the history of our province well before the white settlers arrived. A united church minister once described people who die as the “angels who go before us”, and I think it’s a beautiful way to remember loved ones. It also struck me as the perfect title for this post.

color therapy…

EYESHADOW

When I was a child, there was nothing more exciting than getting a brand new box of crayons. I loved the box with the little sharpener, the smell of the wax, and all the amazing colors. Sigh.

I grew up in a working-class home, so it was a BIG deal getting that box. My mom would do without things for herself, just to make sure that I had art supplies. Color and creativity run in my veins, and I’m grateful for that gift, because it means I never get bored for long.

Today the rain is pounding down outside, and we’ve all got cabin fever with nowhere to go. So when my daughter asked for my help setting up a blog about makeup, my creative juices came to life. It appears that my girl has the same love of colors as I did when I was her age. The medium is different, but the passion is the same. This is a shot of one of her many, many, many M.A.C. makeup palettes.

Immersed in intoxicating colors…a pretty sweet way to spend an afternoon.

HORSESHOE

Project 365 Photos: #74

I’ve been informed that an upside down horseshoe will drain all your luck away. I was pretty lucky that my friend pointed out this beautiful old horseshoe, so I’d have to say, “nah nah nah nah nah,” to all the bad luck faeries.

This noble Haida totem pole stands at White Rock Beach in British Columbia, overlooking the peaceful bay. There are a pair of these beautiful works of art and I’ve loved them since the minute they were erected, in 1998. I grew up learning about the indigenous people of the pacific northwest, and their art and culture have impacted so many parts of my life. These poles are a beautiful reminder to gentle with our environment and our neighbours.

painting inspiration…

I finally got around to painting on the big hot pink canvas I prepared last year! The sunshine and blossoms we’re starting to enjoy inspired me and got my creative juices flowing again. I’m having fun experimenting with some new oil paints that can be cleaned up with water–who knew?

MINI ROBOT BOMB

Aqua Robots

Project 365 Photos: #32

I’m really inspired by colour. If I had a favourite colour, it would be aqua. Add robots to the mix, and I go crazy. When it comes to photographing, I’m instantly drawn to colours, like a crow that spots a fry from a mile away! The shoppers in the Whistler Lush store must have thought I was nuts shooting pictures of these adorable bath bombs–crazy tourist!!! Here’s a shout-out to the Lush girls, who helped me out with my photos! I’ve got a great one of Inka that I’ll profile tomorrow.

BASKET LIGHT

lowly light love

Project 365 Photos: #29

When’s the last time this light fixture felt “the love”? Just look at all that dust!

When I’m photographing, I look for the “out-of-the-ordinary”, or unusual angles…just something interesting. I’m always looking up now, and I’ve nearly always got my camera with me so I can showcase the “mundane”. It’s just my little ol’ interpretation of art.
