easter dinner confidential…

It’s my turn to host Easter dinner this year, so I’m in a bit of a panic to figure out the menu. Oh don’t get me wrong…I AM whining! There’s not even a single picture in this post–that’s how serious this is!

It’s hard to juggle a business, kids with activities that always seem to involve me driving, cleaning my home (okay…so that’s a bit of a stretch) and maintaining good family relations by hosting when it’s my turn to host.

I used to love entertaining by having large dinner parties and inviting copious amounts of people over every weekend. I’d spend two days shopping for groceries and preparing the food. Then I’d break into a sweat cleaning all day before the party while popping in and out of the kitchen to stir concoctions on the stove, rinse salad vegetables, and fold napkins. I even used Q-tips around the powder room sink faucet–M.A.N.I.A.C.

The house was e a gleaming example of perfection–a reflection of my perfect ability to maintain a perfect household. I win, I win, I win. I was the best person ever! Smoke and mirrors, baby, smoke and mirrors! Our guests never knew that the ominous mountain of “junk” would be straining to spring open the laundry room door at just the wrong moment!

Sigh. Good times…NOT!

I’m over it. No more. I love my friends and family, but not that much! Now, I’m way more relaxed. If the porch isn’t swept to within an inch of its life, I’m okay with it. At least my family won’t be cowering in a corner trying to avoid mom’s vaccuum! I think it makes me a nicer hostess too. Not so uptight about muddling the mint leaves “just so” for the mojitos!

But I digress…back to my Easter menu. Now that I’m whipped up in to a froth of laziness, I’m actually considering “sourcing out” the meal. Maybe my sister can bring some mashed potatoes–she owes me. I bet my mom will take pity on me and offer up an apple pie (nobody can beat her crust–take that Martha Stewart). All I need to do is find a turkey that’s already injected with butter and I’m set. But what about the dreaded salad? Who’s gonna wash the lettuce and prepare all the ingredients? The kids–they so owe me!!!!!

I will, however, actually have the house all sparkling and spotless, and I’ll set a gorgeous dinner table set with all kinds of beautiful wares and flowers. I’ll make sure the linen tablecloth and napkins are pressed and starched. I’ll even put on my best apron and force Jane to wear one too. We will definitely look the image of perfection.

My family will ooh and ahhh and proclaim it Jennifer’s Best Easter Ever!!!! Take that, sisters! I can’t help it…I’m competitive. Lazy, but competitive!
